Bagels is the duo composed of UK-based filmmakers Roni Niu and Patrick Carlo Bangit. Through experimenting with different mediums, they believe there are infinite ways, shapes, and forms to tell a story. Many of their projects take on experimental narratives with open endings, allowing space for the viewers to create their own interpretations. With this in mind, they intend to create abstract visuals that can support the narrative while leaving room for imagination. Last but not least, as self-taught, independent filmmakers with limited resources, a major part of their practice is closely linked to creative problem-solving. Through this experience, they have learned to be resourceful in a creative manner – to think outside the box.

Bagels was awarded 3rd place in #CreateCOP27 for their film ‘How Long Have We Been Doing This’, which addresses the need to act urgently in matters such as global warming and overpopulation. Illustrating this through a dystopian, futuristic narrative whereby we have been forced to leave Earth because of its human-inflicted destruction, Bagels successfully captures the dire consequences of our actions, urging viewers to reflect upon the need for decisive measures to mitigate these pressing challenges. Using their prize money to fund other independent projects, Bagels have since experimented with new avenues of creativity including AI filmmaking.
