Mithun’s project ‘The Payback’ earned him an Honourable Mention in the 2022 Earth Partner Prize. The project consists of a variety of photos taken during different natural disasters during 2019 and 2021, all of which are directly or indirectly related to climate change. Disasters documented by Mithun in this project include a landslide that occurred in Kerala in 2019, the Kerala flood in the same year and the heat wave of 2020.
ABOUT MITHUN
Mithun Anila Mitran, a photographer from Kerala, India, learned the art of photography from his father, Mithran, who owns a professional photography studio. Growing up, Mithun developed his skills by capturing images of everyday objects around his home. At 17, Mithun began travelling, gaining new experiences that further honed his ability to find unique frames. After completing his graduation, he pursued journalism studies and now has a career as a photojournalist. Throughout his career, Mithun has had the opportunity to cover significant events in Kerala, including the 2019 and 2020 Kerala Floods, the COVID-19 outbreak, and cyclones such as Maha and Tauktae. He has also documented various state, national, artistic, sports, and political events. Since participating in the Earth Partner Prize, Mithun refocused his energy on a series depicting the effects of rising temperatures on wildlife, including the large number of deaths that have occurred due to forest fires and lack of water.
