Woo Jin Joo’s fears lie in the “empty promises or unenforced legislation” that result in limited change, leaving the climate emergency to continue to wreak havoc on the world. In her ongoing Waste Mythology project, Woo Jin uses storytelling to challenge our perception of waste and values. Inspired by East Asian folklore, she uses mixed media and textiles to reimagine everyday objects through the lens of modernised mythological narratives. She highlights the importance of preserving diverse cultural viewpoints in addressing the escalating climate emergency.
ABOUT WOO JIN
Woo Jin is a mixed-media artist and educator, specialising in soft sculpture and textiles art. Originally from Seoul, Korea, she is currently based in London, where she completed her bachelor’s and master’s degree at Central Saint Martins and Royal College of Art respectively. Influenced by East Asian philosophies, mythology and folk culture, her work investigates the relationship between humans and their daily objects in today’s consumerist society. By working with older pieces that are often overlooked, Woo Jin seeks to re-narrate stories around them and present a vantage point that challenges our current perception of objects as an infinite and limitless resource. Through storytelling, art, and craft, she seeks to address the topic of environmental sustainability and material value in a way that is engaging and inclusive.
